Sam George Condemns LGBTQ+ Photo at Independence Square, Demands Enforcement

Sam George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, has fiercely condemned the recent circulation of photos showing a same-sex couple posing at Ghana’s historic Independence Square, calling it a gross violation of the nation’s cultural and moral values.

In a strongly worded statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, the outspoken MP described the couple’s actions as an “abhorrent disrespect” to Ghanaian traditions and national symbols. “I have seen numerous tags and posts about the abhorrent disrespect of our culture and values by two ‘useless’ individuals. The disrespect of our national symbols is despicable to say the least,” he wrote.

The images, believed to have been part of the #ShowGhanaLove campaign by a South African same-sex couple, have sparked national debate over LGBTQ+ rights, freedom of expression, and the sanctity of Ghana’s cultural icons. The photos, taken at key monuments like Black Star Square, were intended as a peaceful protest against the country’s pending anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, but have ignited significant backlash from both citizens and political figures.

Sam George used the opportunity to push back at critics from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) who have called on him to intervene. Labeling them as hypocrites, he pointed to the NPP administration’s failure to enact the Family Values Bill, despite parliamentary and judicial approval.

“I am shocked to see apologists of the NPP calling on me and demanding action. What a shameless lot!” George said, referencing former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s decision not to sign the bill before leaving office.

He reaffirmed his commitment to passing legislation that aligns with Ghanaian cultural values, revealing that the Family Values Bill has been re-submitted to Parliament with the Speaker’s approval and is due for a first reading soon.

“The values, morals, and innocence of our children MUST be protected. I would demand that President John Dramani Mahama sign the Bill when we get it passed again. My position has NOT changed but I despise hypocrites,” he declared.

In closing, George called on the Ghana Police Service and national security agencies to locate and prosecute the individuals behind the viral images. “There must be consequences for actions that seek to undermine our identity and heritage,” he said.

This statement further intensifies the already polarizing discourse around LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana, as lawmakers, religious groups, activists, and citizens debate the future of inclusivity and cultural preservation in the country. As the Family Values Bill returns to Parliament, all eyes remain on Ghana’s legislative and executive responses to this growing national conversation.
