Mahama Announces AICC Renovation and New Convention Centre

President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major renovation of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) alongside plans to construct a new convention and creative events centre, as part of a bold strategy to position Ghana as West Africa’s premier destination for meetings, conferences, concerts, and exhibitions.

Speaking during the 2026 State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Friday, February 27, President Mahama emphasised that infrastructure development remains central to his administration’s plan to revitalise the creative economy and boost tourism. He explained that the AICC, though iconic and historically significant, requires urgent refurbishment to meet modern international standards.

According to the President, the original contractors of the facility, Energo Project Ghana Ltd, have conducted a structural integrity assessment at the request of the Office of the Chief of Staff. The assessment examined the condition of the building and provided recommendations for comprehensive renovation and refurbishment works. He assured Parliament that the contractors are expected to begin work within the next few weeks.

The AICC has for decades served as a key venue for high-level conferences, exhibitions, and entertainment events, hosting both local and international gatherings. However, President Mahama stressed that the facility alone is not sufficient for a country aiming to significantly expand its meetings and events industry.

To address this gap, the government will collaborate with the private sector to commence construction of a new, state-of-the-art convention and creative events centre later this year. The proposed facility is expected to provide modern infrastructure capable of accommodating large-scale international conferences, trade exhibitions, musical concerts, and other major creative events. The initiative is designed to strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness in attracting global and regional gatherings.

In addition to the AICC upgrade and the new convention centre, President Mahama also announced plans to renovate the State Banquet Hall, which has remained closed for several years. The refurbishment of the Banquet Hall is intended to restore its status as a premier venue for state functions and national ceremonies.

The President linked these projects to broader national objectives, including strengthening Ghana’s presence in major continental and global sporting and cultural events. He noted that modern infrastructure is essential for promoting tourism, creating jobs, and enhancing national pride.

The government believes that improved event facilities will stimulate economic activity in sectors such as hospitality, transportation, entertainment, and small businesses. By investing in world-class infrastructure, Ghana aims to attract more international visitors, boost foreign exchange earnings, and solidify its position as a leading events and creative hub in West Africa.

The AICC renovation and new convention centre project form part of a wider economic strategy focused on sustainable growth, private sector collaboration, and long-term national development. If successfully executed, the initiative could mark a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to expand its creative economy and strengthen its global profile as a destination for high-profile international events.
