Reggae-dancehall artiste Ras Kuuku has criticised musicians who claim they are not interested in winning awards, describing such statements as dishonest and insincere.
Speaking to Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, the “Wo” hitmaker argued that every artiste naturally craves recognition for their efforts, and music awards remain one of the most significant forms of validation in the industry.

“Any artiste who says they don’t do music for awards is lying. Awards bring joy and make fans proud. It’s a recognition of your hard work,” he said. “When you win, it means the music you planted has borne fruit. If you don’t, then maybe what you sowed failed to be harvested.”
Ras Kuuku added that awards not only distinguish artistes from their peers but also motivate them to improve.
“Those who say they don’t want awards are the same ones who love comparisons. Awards set you apart. If you’re an artiste, whether legendary or not, and you’ve never won a TGMA, then there’s something wrong,” he declared.
The musician further revealed that many artistes secretly feel disappointed when their efforts go unrecognized, saying some even cry in private after missing out on awards.
Ras Kuuku, who has himself won several accolades over the years, said he takes great pride in those achievements, describing them as symbols of fulfilment and hard work in his musical journey.
He also called on the Ghanaian music industry to value and support recognition platforms such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), noting that such events not only celebrate excellence but also motivate artistes to do better and strengthen their bond with fans.

Ras Kuuku’s comments have sparked conversations among fans and industry players about the true value of awards in shaping an artiste’s legacy. Many agree that while talent and impact are essential, recognition through awards often boosts confidence and marketability.
The reggae-dancehall star emphasized that music is a competitive art form, and every performer seeks acknowledgment for their creativity and dedication. He also encouraged emerging artistes to take nominations seriously and use them as motivation to refine their craft.
According to Ras Kuuku, awards not only celebrate success but also serve as milestones that inspire continuous growth and excellence.
