Kafui Danku-Pitcher Explains Why She Joined the NDC

The newly appointed Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), Kafui Danku-Pitcher, has opened up about her decision to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing a combination of personal experiences, leadership ambition, and admiration for the party’s inclusivity, especially toward women and young people.

Speaking on Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM, Kafui revealed that her political alignment was inspired by dissatisfaction with the previous government’s performance and her desire to contribute to meaningful change.

“I used to support people in my community. I told you about the project I was doing that was stressing me based on the government at that time. So I decided to support people who were working toward change,” she explained. “I didn’t really join until it got to a point when I said I can’t be suffering and keep quiet.”

Kafui emphasized that the NDC’s openness to youth and female participation in politics was a major factor that drew her in. She commended the party for breaking traditional gender norms and offering a platform that amplifies women’s voices.

“In our 68 years of independence, nobody has come out strongly to say a female should lead. It takes a lot, based on what we see in our homes and how women are treated in this country in 2025, for someone to say ‘this woman is qualified, she can do it,’” she stated passionately. “That is so attractive, re-echoing the voices of little girls that you can do better.”

Though relatively new to her role as Executive Secretary of the NFA, Kafui expressed confidence in her capacity to lead, pointing to her experience in various leadership roles over the years. She also credited her fans and supporters for encouraging her to step into public service.

“My followers felt it was time. They said I had done so well and needed to lead, pursue a cause, do something bigger,” she said. “Even before I was so involved in the campaign, people would say, ‘Minister of Tourism,’ or ‘Deputy Minister of Tourism.’”

As Executive Secretary, Kafui Danku-Pitcher is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the NFA, reporting to a Board chaired by a seasoned film practitioner. The Authority is tasked with regulating and developing Ghana’s film industry, implementing policies for production, distribution, and marketing of films, and promoting Ghanaian cinema both locally and globally.

Her journey from film to politics highlights a growing trend of creatives leveraging their platforms for public influence and national service. Kafui’s story is not only one of career evolution but also a powerful example of civic responsibility in action.
