The Ghanaian gospel fraternity is in mourning following the passing of Maame Tiwaa, the beloved longtime backing vocalist for legendary gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.
She died on Sunday, December 7, after a short illness.
For decades, Maame Tiwaa’s unmistakable voice served as the melodic balance within the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo group, contributing significantly to the group’s timeless sound. Her harmonies, emotional depth, and vocal strength played a vital role in shaping many of the songs that made the group a household name in Ghanaian gospel music.

Maame Tiwaa was more than just a backing vocalist — she was a pillar in the Asomafo ensemble. Her calm spirit and consistent musicianship made her one of the most respected female voices in the gospel scene.
Her recent appearances demonstrated her enduring passion for ministry and performance. She graced the stage at this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) with a moving tribute performance that touched many hearts. She also performed at her son’s wedding, where she radiated joy and pride.
In recent months, Maame Tiwaa also became widely recognized for her unwavering support for Yaw Sarpong as he faced his own health challenges. She was frequently seen accompanying him, offering help, encouragement, and companionship — a gesture many fans praised as a testament to her loyalty and compassion.
News of her passing has triggered a wave of tributes from fans, industry colleagues, pastors, musicians, and gospel music lovers across the country. Many describe her as humble, gifted, and deeply committed to her calling as a minister through music.

For the gospel community, her death represents the loss of not only a gifted vocalist but also a woman whose life embodied service, spirituality, and quiet excellence.
The family is expected to release official funeral details in the coming days as loved ones, colleagues, and fans prepare to honour her life and legacy.
Maame Tiwaa’s voice may be silent, but her contributions to Ghanaian gospel music — especially her work with Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo — will continue to echo for generations.
