Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician and founder of the Asomafo gospel group, Yaw Sarpong, has passed away, marking the end of a defining chapter in the history of gospel music in Ghana.
The news of his death was confirmed to oneking multimedia by his manager, Nana Poku Ashis. As of the time of reporting, details surrounding the cause of his death have not been officially disclosed.

Yaw Sarpong’s passing comes barely a month after the death of Maame Tiwa, a key pillar and longtime member of the Asomafo music group. Her loss had already sent shockwaves through the gospel music fraternity, making Sarpong’s death an even heavier blow to the Christian music community.
For several years, Yaw Sarpong had been battling ill health, which occasionally forced him to withdraw from public performances and musical engagements as he focused on treatment and recovery. Despite these challenges, his influence and presence in Ghanaian gospel music remained profound.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of Ghana’s gospel music, Yaw Sarpong rose to national prominence as the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo. The group played a pivotal role in shaping the sound, structure, and lyrical depth of modern Akan gospel music.
