Nigerian actress, filmmaker, and producer Funke Akindele has earned a major international accolade as she is named among The Hollywood Reporter’s “Most Influential Women in International Film.”
This recognition places her on a prestigious list of 46 outstanding women globally who are making significant strides in the film industry outside of the United States.

The announcement, made on Friday, May 9, marks another remarkable milestone in Akindele’s already illustrious career. Known for her dynamic storytelling and commanding screen presence, Funke Akindele has firmly established herself as a powerhouse in Nollywood, the thriving Nigerian film industry.
Her notable productions include the record-breaking “Omo Ghetto: The Saga”, which became the highest-grossing Nigerian movie of all time upon its release, and “A Tribe Called Judah”, both of which showcased her capacity to blend comedy with social commentary. Her long-running television series, “Jenifa’s Diary,” also remains a fan favorite across Africa and the diaspora, solidifying her place as one of the continent’s most bankable talents.
Reacting to the news, Akindele took to her Instagram page to share her gratitude and reflect on the significance of the recognition.
“I’m deeply honoured and truly grateful to be featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s ‘The Most Influential Women in International Film.’ To be recognised among 46 powerful, visionary women from around the world is more than a moment of celebration—it’s a call to keep building, creating boldly, and lifting others as we rise,” she wrote.
She emphasized that this recognition is not just a personal achievement but a responsibility to continue telling impactful African stories and to champion other creatives in the industry.
Akindele also used the moment to celebrate fellow Nigerian honoree Mo Abudu, a media mogul and trailblazer in African storytelling. She expressed admiration and respect for Abudu’s longstanding contributions to the global visibility of African narratives.

“A heartfelt congratulations to Aunty MO @moabudu who has also been featured in this great piece. Thank you so much, Ma, for your invaluable contribution to the creative industry. It’s an honor to be featured alongside someone who has been such a powerful source of inspiration,” Akindele added.
The inclusion of both Akindele and Abudu in such an esteemed international list underscores the rising global influence of Nollywood and African creatives. It sends a strong message that African cinema is no longer on the sidelines but is an essential and celebrated part of the global film narrative.
As Akindele continues to break barriers and elevate Nollywood’s profile on the world stage, this latest recognition stands as both a celebration of her past achievements and a motivator for future creative endeavors.
