The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has outlined key achievements made since assuming office, highlighting the successful securing of a $30 million investment for the renovation of the National Theatre of Ghana.
The funding, secured by President John Dramani Mahama, marks a major milestone in efforts to restore and modernise one of the country’s most significant cultural landmarks.

According to the Minister, the investment demonstrates the government’s strong commitment to revitalising Ghana’s creative and cultural sector. The National Theatre, which has for decades served as a home for theatre, dance, music, and other artistic expressions, has faced numerous structural and technical challenges that have limited its full potential. The planned renovation aims to address these issues comprehensively.
Gomashie explained that the refurbishment will focus on upgrading performance spaces, improving technical equipment, and modernising facilities to meet contemporary international standards. This will enhance the quality of productions hosted at the theatre and provide a more conducive environment for artists, performers, and audiences alike.
The Minister noted that the intervention goes beyond infrastructure development, describing it as a strategic investment in Ghana’s creative economy. By improving the National Theatre, the government hopes to strengthen the ecosystem that supports creative professionals, cultural institutions, and emerging talents across the country.
She further emphasised that the renovation will play a key role in boosting cultural tourism. As one of Ghana’s most recognisable cultural institutions, a modernised National Theatre is expected to attract more local and international visitors, contributing to increased economic activity and job creation within the arts and tourism sectors.
The renovation project is also seen as an important step in preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage. By restoring the theatre to its former glory while equipping it for the future, the initiative seeks to ensure that the nation’s artistic traditions continue to thrive in a rapidly evolving global cultural landscape.

Gomashie described the $30 million investment as a clear signal that culture and creativity are central to Ghana’s national development agenda. She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working with stakeholders across the creative arts industry to ensure that the renovation delivers lasting benefits.
With the planned upgrades, the National Theatre is expected to reclaim its position as the heartbeat of Ghana’s cultural life, providing a world-class platform for artistic expression and reinforcing the country’s identity as a vibrant cultural destination in Africa.
