Member of Parliament for the Asante Akyem North Constituency, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has reportedly been detained at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands, sparking concern among political circles and the general public in Ghana.

The development was confirmed in an official statement issued by the Parliament of Ghana on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

The statement, signed by Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Clerk to Parliament, disclosed that parliamentary leadership is currently engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather detailed information regarding the incident.

According to the statement, the exact reason behind the MP’s detention has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Parliament, however, assured the public that efforts are underway to establish the facts surrounding the situation.

“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon. Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong, has been detained at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands,” the statement read.

It further added: “The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter.”

The news has quickly generated reactions on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing surprise over the incident while awaiting clarity from authorities. Others have called for patience until official details emerge concerning the circumstances surrounding the detention.

Kwame Ohene Frimpong became one of the biggest political surprises in the 2024 general elections after contesting the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.

His victory shocked many political observers, as he defeated the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, by a wide margin.

Official election results showed that Frimpong secured 26,926 votes, while the NPP candidate polled 8,933 votes. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Kofi Asamoah, obtained 2,469 votes.

His victory was widely described as historic, considering the constituency had long been considered a stronghold of the NPP.

Since entering Parliament, Frimpong has attracted attention for his independent political stance and grassroots appeal.

The reported detention at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has therefore become a major talking point, especially given his growing profile in Ghanaian politics. However, until official details are released, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

Parliament has assured Ghanaians that updates will be provided once more information becomes available through diplomatic channels.
