Swedru-based businessman Abu Trica remains in custody despite being granted bail by the Accra High Court, after failing to meet the GH₵30 million conditions set for his release.
The court has now directed his legal team to apply for a variation of the bail terms, as his extradition case to the United States continues to unfold.

Abu Trica was granted bail on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, by the General Jurisdiction 2 Division of the High Court. The court set the bail at GH₵30 million with two justified sureties, a condition that has proven difficult for the businessman to fulfil.
Following the ruling, his lawyer, Oliver Barker Vormawor, confirmed the development in a social media post, indicating that the court had approved bail pending further proceedings.
However, more than a week after the decision, Abu Trica remains in custody due to his inability to meet the financial and legal requirements attached to the bail.
In a fresh development on Monday, May 4, the High Court instructed his lawyers to formally file an application seeking a review of the bail conditions. The directive comes after concerns were raised about the practicality of the initial terms.
Reports indicate that the defence team is preparing a motion to request revised conditions that would make it possible for their client to secure his release while the case continues.
The ongoing legal battle centres around extradition proceedings, with Abu Trica contesting efforts to transfer him to the United States. While details of the underlying allegations have not been fully disclosed in court filings made public so far, the case has attracted significant public attention.
The situation has also sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, with many Ghanaians questioning whether the GH₵30 million bail requirement is excessively high.
Some observers argue that strict bail conditions are necessary in high-profile or international cases to ensure that the accused does not evade justice. Others, however, believe the conditions should be reasonable enough to allow the accused to exercise their right to bail.

Legal analysts note that bail variation is a common legal process, particularly in cases where the original conditions are deemed too difficult to satisfy. The court has the discretion to review and adjust these terms based on arguments presented by the defence.
As proceedings continue, attention will now shift to the outcome of the anticipated bail variation application. The court’s decision could determine whether Abu Trica remains in custody or is granted revised conditions that allow for his temporary release.
For now, the businessman remains behind bars, with his legal team working to secure more favourable bail terms in the coming days.
