Otto Addo Dismisses Pressure Amid Calls for His Sack After Austria Defeat

Otto Addo has addressed growing speculation surrounding his future as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, acknowledging that his position has consistently been under pressure.

The Black Stars coach made the remarks ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Germany in Stuttgart, following a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria that has reignited public calls for his dismissal.

Despite the criticism, Addo remains unfazed, insisting that scrutiny has always been part of his role—even during moments of success. “My job is always under threat.

Even when we qualified for the World Cup, people were calling for me to step down, so it’s always under threat. But as a coach, if you think about these things, you get caught up, so I don’t really care,” he stated.

The 50-year-old tactician has faced increasing pressure since Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a setback that drew widespread disappointment from fans and pundits alike.

However, the Ghana Football Association opted to retain him, citing his role in securing Ghana’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a key achievement.

Addo emphasised that his primary focus remains on improving the team’s performance and ensuring that players are well-prepared for upcoming matches. “For me, the most important thing is to prepare as well as I can and help the players do their best on the pitch.

That’s it. To be honest, the speculation isn’t really relevant—we just try our best all the time,” he added.

The Black Stars now face a crucial test against Germany, with the team looking to bounce back from their disappointing performance against Austria. The upcoming fixture is seen as an important opportunity to rebuild confidence and demonstrate progress ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With expectations high and scrutiny intensifying, Addo’s ability to steady the team and deliver improved results could play a significant role in shaping both his future and Ghana’s prospects on the international stage.
