Awal Mohammed Apologises to Shatta Wale and Fans Over ‘Junkies’ Comment

Member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Communication Team, Awal Mohammed, has issued a public apology to dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, following widespread backlash over comments he made about the musician’s fan base.

The apology comes after Awal Mohammed faced intense criticism from industry stakeholders, fans, and members of the general public over remarks made during a live discussion on Joy News’ morning show on Tuesday, January 20, 2025. The panel discussion focused on the government’s stringent bail conditions, but during the debate, Awal Mohammed inadvertently referred to a section of Shatta Wale’s supporters as “junkies.”

The comment quickly sparked outrage, particularly among members of the Shatta Movement, who described the remark as disrespectful and unnecessary. Many took to social media to demand an apology, arguing that public commentators must be mindful of their language, especially when discussing influential figures in the entertainment industry.

In response to the backlash, Awal Mohammed took to his Facebook page to clarify his statement and formally apologise to Shatta Wale and his fans.

“I appeared on Joy News yesterday for the morning show. During the debate, while condemning the Government’s stringent bail conditions, I inadvertently referred to a section of Shatta Wale supporters as ‘junkies,’” he wrote.

He went on to admit that his choice of words was inappropriate and did not reflect his values.

“I want to clarify that I didn’t intend to insult or belittle anyone. The term was unnecessary, and I’m truly sorry for any offense caused. I respect the passion of fans and acknowledge that my choice of words was wrong—it was totally out of sync with my character. I sincerely apologise and hope we can move forward positively,” Awal Mohammed added.

The apology has since been welcomed by many fans and observers, with several industry insiders praising him for taking responsibility and addressing the issue directly. Some commentators noted that the incident highlights the need for greater sensitivity and accountability in public discourse, particularly where politics and entertainment intersect.

Shatta Wale, one of Ghana’s most influential and polarising music figures, commands a massive and loyal fan base. As a result, comments about his supporters often attract strong reactions, underscoring the cultural significance of music fandom in the country.

Awal Mohammed concluded his apology with a call for unity and respectful dialogue, emphasising that Ghana’s political and entertainment spaces must be guided by mutual respect.

The episode has reignited conversations about responsible communication in the media, reminding public figures of the impact their words can have in shaping public opinion and social harmony.
