Ghanaian musician and outspoken public figure Mzbel has revealed that she stopped attending church and practising Christianity following an experience that left her uncomfortable, a decision she says marked the beginning of a deeper journey into self-discovery and alternative spirituality.
Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM on Thursday, January 15, the singer explained that her exit from the church was not abrupt but was triggered by a specific incident that caused her to question her place within the Christian faith. Although she did not go into detail about the event, she maintained that it was significant enough to influence her decision.
“Something happened in the church that I wasn’t comfortable with, so I quit,” Mzbel stated, adding that she has shared the experience publicly on several occasions in the past.
According to the musician, leaving church opened a new chapter in her life, one defined by research, reflection, and personal exploration. She explained that after stepping away from organised religion, she began studying life, humanity, and the purpose of existence, which eventually shaped her current belief system.
“It started after I left church and I started doing research about life, about this world and what we are supposed to do,” she said during the interview.
Mzbel also spoke extensively about meditation, which she described as a central part of her spiritual practice. Rather than relying on external doctrines, she explained that meditation allows her to look inward for understanding and clarity, depending on the questions she seeks answers to.
“Meditation is basically going within yourself to find some answers, depending on what you want to know. That’s what I do,” she explained.
The singer was careful to clarify that her departure from Christianity does not mean she has abandoned purpose or direction in life. Instead, she described her current spiritual journey as deeply personal, emphasising that it is a path she feels destined to follow.
“It’s my path. It’s a path that I’m supposed to follow,” Mzbel said, reinforcing her belief that spirituality is not one-size-fits-all.
Despite her shift in beliefs, Mzbel stressed that she remains active in music and continues to express herself creatively. She noted that her evolving mindset and lifestyle have not diminished her passion for her craft, but rather influenced how she views life and expresses her truth.
