Manhyia Palace Postpones Oath Hearing in Daddy Lumba Family Dispute

The Manhyia Palace has postponed the hearing of a case involving Ernestina Akosua Bimpomaa, the sister of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, known as Daddy Lumba, after she invoked the Great Oath of the Asantehene.

The matter, which stems from a dispute between Bimpomaa and Daddy Lumba’s first wife, Akosua Serwaa, over who is recognized as the musician’s lawful spouse, was scheduled for a hearing on Monday, November 3, 2025. However, the Palace adjourned proceedings due to a related court case still pending judgment.

According to Asante custom, once the Great Oath is invoked, the matter must be handled exclusively by the Manhyia Palace, as civil courts lack jurisdiction in such spiritual and traditional cases.

Meanwhile, the Kumasi High Court has dismissed an injunction filed by Akosua Serwaa seeking to halt the funeral rites of the late musician. The court ruled that, in line with Asante tradition, authority over the remains of the deceased lies with his extended family rather than his spouse.

With the injunction lifted, the case now shifts to the central question of who is legally recognized as Daddy Lumba’s surviving wife. The court has directed both parties to file all required legal documents by October 31, with a Case Management Conference scheduled for November 14.

The main hearing is set to commence on November 17 and is expected to conclude by November 21, with a final judgment anticipated on November 25.

The ongoing legal and traditional proceedings have drawn widespread public attention, as Daddy Lumba remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife icons.

Many fans and cultural observers view the case as a test of how traditional authority and the modern legal system coexist in resolving family and inheritance disputes.

Legal experts say the court’s final verdict will likely influence how similar marital disputes are settled in the future, especially when cultural and statutory laws collide.

Meanwhile, family representatives have called for calm and privacy as both the Palace and the courts navigate the complex issues surrounding the late musician’s legacy.
