EC Announces November 11 By-Elections Across Electoral Areas Nationwide

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the conduct of nationwide by-elections in several Electoral Areas and Unit Committees on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

The exercise seeks to fill vacancies created by the death or resignation of Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended by Act 940.

In a statement signed by the Chairperson of the Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa, the EC revealed that the nomination period will open on Monday, October 6, and close on Thursday, October 16. This gives prospective candidates a ten-day window to complete and submit all required documentation.

According to the EC, nomination forms are available free of charge at all District Offices of the Electoral Commission. Alternatively, aspirants can download the forms from the EC’s official website at www.ec.gov.gh/forms.

Candidates are expected to submit their completed nomination forms between Monday, October 13 and Thursday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and again from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.

Each submission must include four copies of the completed nomination form and two recent passport-sized photographs with a red background.

For Electoral Area elections, each nomination form must be endorsed by a proposer, a seconder, and eighteen registered voters residing within the area. In the case of Unit Committee elections, the endorsement must come from a proposer, a seconder, and eight registered voters from the same locality.

The EC emphasized that candidates, or their proposers and seconders, must personally submit the nomination forms to the Returning Officer responsible for their respective Electoral Areas.

The by-elections will take place in more than 1,500 polling stations across multiple regions, including:

  • Greater Accra Region: Ablekuma Central, Weija-Gbawe, La-Nkwantanang, Adenta
  • Central Region: Cape Coast, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem, Mfantseman
  • Western Region: Jomoro, Ellembelle, Nzema East, Sekondi-Takoradi
  • Eastern Region: Asuogyaman, Yilo Krobo, Suhum, New Juaben
  • Ashanti Region: Adansi South, Obuasi Municipal, Bosomtwe, Offinso North
  • Volta Region: Keta, Ketu South, Ho, Afadjato South
  • Bono, Ahafo, Western North Regions: various selected districts

A comprehensive list of all affected Electoral Areas, Unit Committees, and polling stations has been made available at EC District Offices and on the official EC website.

The EC encouraged all eligible voters in these areas to actively participate in the exercise. It also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, fairness, and integrity in conducting the upcoming polls.

“The Commission wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that the by-elections will be organized in a transparent and credible manner consistent with Ghana’s democratic principles,” the statement added.

The EC further advised all candidates and interested persons to contact their respective Returning Officers or visit the nearest EC District Office for more information regarding the nomination and election processes.

As the November 11 by-elections approach, attention now turns to how political parties and independent candidates will mobilize support at the local level — a process often seen as a key indicator of community engagement and grassroots democracy in Ghana.

The exercise is also expected to test the readiness of the Electoral Commission ahead of Ghana’s 2028 General Elections, as it continues to fine-tune administrative and logistical procedures to ensure efficiency and credibility in future polls.
