The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed reports suggesting that the validity period of the Ghana Card will be reduced from ten years.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the Authority reaffirmed that the Ghana Card “remains valid for 10 years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed as required by law.”

The clarification follows claims that the Executive Secretary of the NIA, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, had announced changes to the card’s renewal policy. According to the Authority, his comments were misrepresented.
The statement explained that Mr. Deku did not announce a policy shift but only suggested that future reviews could potentially explore shorter update intervals to keep pace with technological advancements.
The NIA emphasised that the current ten-year renewal system is still in force, noting that the validity period is aligned with the card’s durability and the likelihood of changes in cardholders’ biometric and personal features over a decade.
“The Ghana Card continues to be valid for 10 years before renewal, as provided by law,” the Authority reiterated, urging the public to disregard the misleading information.
The NIA further assured citizens of its commitment to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready identity system that meets both current and emerging needs.
