EOCO Says Shatta Wale Cannot Prove Legal Ownership of Lamborghini

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has revealed that Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale, legally known as Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., cannot provide proof that he legally owns the yellow Lamborghini Urus currently under investigation.

In a statement released on Thursday, August 21, 2025, EOCO disclosed that during questioning, Shatta Wale claimed he purchased the vehicle from “the Street.”

He reportedly stated that the individual who sold him the luxury car was possibly called “ZAK,” a person who allegedly contacted him through WhatsApp. However, the artiste admitted that he did not know the seller personally and no longer has the contact information.

EOCO further stated that Shatta Wale has failed to provide any ownership documentation, such as a sales receipt or official car registration papers, to prove the vehicle was acquired legally. The only document in his possession, according to EOCO, is a customs declaration form bearing the name Nana Kwabena Amuah, an individual currently serving a prison sentence.

Shatta Wale was detained earlier this week over an inquiry into alleged unpaid taxes related to the Lamborghini and possible irregularities surrounding its ownership. On Wednesday, EOCO granted him bail set at GHS 10 million with two sureties, but the conditions have not yet been satisfied.

EOCO has maintained that the musician will only be released once all legal and financial requirements of the bail are fully met.

Meanwhile, scores of Shatta Wale’s supporters—clad in black and red—stormed the EOCO offices in Accra demanding his immediate release. Members of the Shatta Movement (SM Family) were seen chanting, wailing, and expressing frustration at what they describe as an unfair detention of their idol.

The protest highlighted the depth of loyalty and passion among Shatta Wale’s fanbase, which has trended heavily across social media platforms with hashtags such as #FreeShattaWale and #SM4Lyf.

Shatta Wale’s media manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah, popularly known as Sammy Flex, confirmed in a video update that the artiste’s legal team is working diligently to meet EOCO’s bail requirements.

Shatta Wale has been granted bail, but the conditions are very stringent. The legal team is doing everything possible to secure his release,” Flex assured. He also urged fans to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.

The controversy surrounding Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini raises broader concerns about tax compliance and vehicle ownership verification in Ghana. The case also highlights the growing scrutiny placed on high-profile figures in the entertainment industry, many of whom are known for flaunting luxury assets on social media.

As the situation unfolds, questions remain about how the lack of proper documentation will impact Shatta Wale’s case and whether EOCO will expand its investigations into potential money laundering, proceeds of crime, or tax evasion.

For now, the musician remains in custody until his bail conditions are fulfilled, while his fans continue to pressure authorities for his immediate release.
